Southern Hills Academy Curriculum
Overview
At Southern Hills Academy we believe that a classroom should
be a busy and interactive place. Our classes are multi-age
and multi-grade to maximize learning opportunities for children.
With diverse perspectives and capabilities, all students thrive
and progress according to their developmental readiness. The
multiage classroom creates a flexible environment where the
teacher can more easily individualize lessons for students
while providing the stimulation and encouragement necessary
for school success.
Our integrated curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, creativity
and problem solving. The teachers at Southern Hills Academy
collaborate to prepare lessons which allow students to investigate
a topic from different points of view, accessing knowledge
across curricular subjects. These themed studies may last
three to ten weeks. A study of coral reefs, for example, might
involve learning about salt water, geography, storm patterns,
tidal currents, animal and plant symbiosis, tourism, erosion,
pollution and minerals. Students might research, journal,
measure, conduct experiments, create dioramas, meet a marine
biologist or deliver a speech. In this way, students have
the opportunity to see "big pictures" and understand
concepts deeply. Integrated lessons make learning fun and
this keeps children interested and eager.
Tomorrow's Leaders Today - At Southern Hills
Academy we start every day with a whole school morning meeting.
Our students and faculty worked together to decide of the
purpose and important components of morning meeting. Both
students and faculty were interested in seeing activities
happen during morning meeting that unite the community, and
kick off the start of each new day in a positive way. Students
and staff work together to incorporate fun, team building
activities that have our school, K-12, working together as
a family. Twice a week, our students are also involved in
character building exercises within Family Groups. Family
Groups consist of a High School leader and a mixed age family
group from Kindergarten on up. These groups work together
to discuss character traits such as respect, responsibility,
caring, fairness and trustworthiness. Students work on projects
that better their school community, Chillicothe community,
state or world.
