Our Mission

The Mission of Southern Hills Academy is to create a culture of learning and respect in which children are taught how to meet intellectual challenges, work collaboratively, express themselves creatively and be persons of character in the world.

Our Vision

We are a caring school community where students are expected to take ownership of their learning, teachers are free to utilize the most effective practices and families partner in their children's education. We are dedicated to extending this college-preparatory experience to students from Preschool through Grade 12. We collaborate on projects in the wider community which enhance the educational experience for all students in our region.

Our Educational Philosophy

We believe children learn best with a child-centered, teacher-directed, parent-supported curriculum and understanding of child development. We view children as individuals with a range of interests and abilities who will work to achieve their personal potential. We believe that children need a joyful, intellectually challenging and creative school environment so they may develop a curious mind and habits for life-long learning.

Southern Hills Academy integrates the curriculum so that strong skills develop across subjects, including: Reading, Writing, Public Speaking, Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Technology, Music, Performance, Art, Physical Education and World Languages and Cultures. A foundation of our teaching and curriculum is the unique "Learning Cycle" which moves students through the steps of concept formation and use: Idea, Research, Study, Connect, Apply and Share.

To capitalize on natural curiosity and enthusiasm for exploration, Southern Hills Academy students are actively engaged in projects, often in groups with multi-age peers. This Social Education requires children to practice collaboration, logic and creativity. At the preschool level, this Project Approach is reflected in our use of the Reggio Emilia Early Childhood philosophy. The goal is for all students to become knowledgeable, self-confident, responsible and happy.
